Disclaimer: The following is a rant about a situation I feel needs to be addressed. Sorry to air out the dirty laundry here, but I figured this is the best place to do it. To be clear the following is about one situation in particular and in no way is intended to criticize any other customers. I really love guitars. I really love fixing them. I love talking guitars with you guys. I love jamming with you guys. Below is a situation where I felt my love of guitars was being taken advantage of and I simply want to put an end to it.
Well it has been awhile since I have written a blog, but I intend to do a few a month again. Guitars took a backseat over the last year as I was focused on other personal and family matters. As most of you know, I work on guitars out of the love of the instruments and more as a hobby than a business. If I feel stressed out or bogged down by the repairs I walk away from it for awhile and that is what I did. But . . . I'm back.
I have a few things I want to address just to get my side of the story out on record. I have a customer - won't mention his name, but overall he is a good guy. A great guitar player. I have nothing personally against this person. What I do have an issue with is the expectations of this customer. I'll make a list:
1. My prices are my prices. They are extremely fair. I am not here to haggle with you every time you bring a guitar in.
2. I am not your personal guitar tech. If I fix a guitar, then you play that guitar live multiple times and travel with it on tour, I will not continue to fix that guitar for free over and over again. Everyone knows playing guitars live puts a tremendous amount of stress and wear and tear on the instruments. I can not warranty repairs in this environment. You need a guitar tech on salary, not a local repairman. I know for a fact I am not the only local luthier to tell you this.
3. I am not here to fix the vintage garbage you find at yard sales and swap meets. This might sound crass to some - because after all I fix guitars. However the reason for this is the absolute crap that is brought it. I have to spend a tremendous amount of time listening to the story and history how this crap was found and then deal with the price haggling. These guitars are junk. They were junk when they were made and they are certainly junk now. They simply are not worth fixing. I am not here to make you money on eBay or Reverb.
4. I am not here to listen to you play for an hour every time you drop a guitar off. No offense, you are great player, but I do not need a personal concert.
5. I now know why every other shop in Orlando will no longer deal with you. Add me to the list.
